A 55-year-old man is in police custody following a family dispute in Salt Lake in Gqeberha on Sunday.
Police spokesperson Sandra Janse van Rensburg says detectives arrested the suspect after he allegedly shot the family dog in the neck.
The shot was apparently aimed at one of his family members.
Janse van Rensburg says it is alleged that the complainant left the house during the argument and was followed into the yard by the suspect who allegedly fired a shot in his direction.
The shot missed and hit the complainant's dog in the neck.
The animal was taken to a local veterinary clinic for treatment.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Gelvandale Magistrate’s Court on Monday to face charges of attempted murder, pointing of a firearm and cruelty to animals.
A licensed firearm belonging to the suspect was also confiscated.
