Health services have resumed at Cape Town’s New Somerset Hospital following Saturday evening’s deadly shooting involving a patient.
This while police in the Western Cape police are investigating the incident which left a police officer and two patients dead.
The shooting occurred in one of the wards on Saturday evening.
The slain police officer was on duty, guarding a suspect who was admitted to the hospital when a patient disarmed and shot him.
Western Cape Health MEC Nomafrench Mbombo says two patients were involved in a tussle before the shooting.
"After the commotion, the shooter had shot two patients and the officer down. He was left alone in the cubicle because everyone ran away, the matron approached him, calmed him down, and managed to disarm him. I want to acknowledge her braveness."
Mbombo says the hospital operations have resumed following the shooting.
"In the ward, everyone was working but we need to provide them space when they feel they cannot do more we can find someone to take over. The sister nurse who apprehended the shooter is at work, she still continues with a routine but remains traumatised."
