The duo was sentenced in the Mthatha High Court in the Eastern Cape on Wednesday.

Sergeant Melikhaya Mbhem (43) was stabbed to death on 17 April 2014.

Hawks spokesperson Aneliza Feni says the officer had been walking in Cala when he was attacked, stabbed and had his service pistol stolen.

Thandazile Dyantyi (30) and Lukholo Bhayibhayi (31) have been sentenced to life imprisonment.

The acting national head of the Hawks, Lieutenant General Yolisa Matakata has welcomed the life sentences.

She says she finds solace that at the end justice has been served.

"We are pleased with the sentencing which is indicative that the wheels of justice are turning. We will not tolerate such atrocious criminal acts especially against police officers. We applaud the Hawks members, the SAPS and the National Prosecuting Authority for their dedication throughout the investigation which resulted in the apprehension and successful prosecution of these criminals," Matakata says.

She adds: "This harsh sentence we believe will send a strong warning message to any would-be police killer that crime does not pay."

The two were sentenced to life imprisonment for robbery and murder, 15 years imprisonment for possession of an unlicensed firearm and 15 years for possession of ammunition.

All sentences will run concurrently.
