Dozens of minibus taxis discontinued in safety blitz

The Gauteng Department of Transport has issued notices to 65 unroadworthy minibuses taxis – demanding their immediate removal from the road.
This comes after the department deployed the Gauteng Transport Inspectorate across the province to crack down on lawlessness on the road.
Provincial Transport spokesperson Lesiba Mpya said during the past week, over 2,800 infringement notices were also issued to vehicles due to defects and serious licensing offences.
“A further hundred and 184 minibus drivers were found operating without valid driver’s licenses. Both categories of offences directly compromise commuters’ and other road users’ safety, highlighting the need for continued vigilance,” said Mpya.
Gauteng Transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela has also approached the taxi industry to root out unlawful road and licensing practices.
“GTI’s weekly operations, now running for several months, form a critical part of the Provincial Government’s broader strategy to improve compliance and tackle lawlessness in the areas of public transport services and on the roads generally,’ said Mpya
“The inspectorate’s presence and visibility on the roads are aimed at dealing with widespread non-compliant practices, whilst also deterring would-be offenders against road infrastructure vandalism and theft.”
