Dr Ramdhani becomes first African with dual-qualification in paediatric and reconstructive surgery
Dr Kirthi Ramdhani, a surgeon from KwaZulu-Natal, has become Africa’s first person to qualify in both paediatric surgery and plastic and reconstructive surgery.
The 38-year-old from Tongaat reached the milestone after completing her second specialist qualification.
Her achievement marks a significant milestone for specialised healthcare on the continent.
Based at Tygerberg Hospital and Stellenbosch University, Ramdhani said combining both disciplines would improve treatment for children with complex congenital conditions, burns, and traumatic injuries.
On their Facebook page, the Smile Foundation, a non-governmental organisation that works with the country’s academic hospitals to perform surgeries on children with facial conditions, described Ramdhani’s achievement as a reflection of her commitment to advancing specialised care for affected children.
