Ninow faces charges of rape, kidnapping, assault, possession of drugs and obstructing the administration of justice.

Several advocacy groups have vowed to keep a close eye on the high-profile case.

The movement against gender-based violence, #NotInMyName, wants Ninow to remain behind bars.

"There have been several attempts from him to leave detention,” says the organisation’s Themba Masondo .

"Additionally, experience and observation has taught us that when perpetrators are cornered they absolve themselves of a crime by claiming insanity.

"Nicholas Ninow is not adrift from reality - he is not insane and he should thus face the full might of the law.

"We call out on the courts to start setting an example for all perpetrators - to put President Cyril Ramaphosa's plan communicated the past few days for gender-based violence into action.”

The organisation Women and Men Against Child Abuse will also attend court proceedings.

"We are positive that the process will be expedient since the courts have set aside two weeks (9-20 September) for this trial,” says the organisation’s founding director Miranda Jordaan.

"WMACA hopes to see the heaviest sentence possible handed down for this despicable transgression against a young child.

"We trust that the case will serve to warn other potential abusers against laying hands on our children, and hope for swift justice for the life-changing trauma this girl was subjected to.”
