Drunk driver bites traffic officer
Updated | By ANA
A 23-year-old drunk driver bit the hand of one of the traffic officers who pulled him over in Westlake after jumping a red light, City of Cape Town authorities said on Monday.
“He initially obeyed the instruction to pull over, but then sped off again with officers in hot pursuit. Officers eventually managed to force him to a stop, but then he tried to evade arrest again by biting the hand of one of the officers,” the mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith said.
“His efforts were, however, in vain, and a breathalyser test found him to be more than twice over the legal blood-alcohol limit.”
Smith said apart from driving under the influence, the man also faces charges of assaulting a police officer, failure to obey a lawful instruction, and damage to city property.
The incident happened on Saturday night. Smith said from Friday until Sunday local traffic police arrested 112 people for drunken driving.
