Protests action aimed at demands for former President Jacob Zuma to be released from prison erupted under the banner #FreeJacobZuma

"There were protests across the province last night where people were blocking the roads, burning tyres, and setting debris alight on the road. In some incidents we had people remove the keys of trucks and park them on major intersections to disrupt the traffic flow," says the police’s Jay Naicker.

"Police responded in most of these incidents - in Empangeni, for example, 19 people were arrested for blocking roads and throwing stones at motorists.”

He adds: “Last night at Mooi river we had an incident where the community that lives along the Mooi River toll plaza had rolled burning tyres onto the road and as a result a number of trucks caught alight and the road was closed, we arrested seven people."

The N3 Toll Concession confirmed on Saturday that 23 trucks, including a tanker and car carrier, were torched.

N3 Toll Concession spokesperson, Thania Dhoogra says the road remains closed and some trucks are still on fire.

Motorists have been advised to find alternative routes.

Zuma's daughter, Duduzile tweeted, "Mooi Plaza, We See You! Amandla!”

N3 Toll Concession spokesperson, Thania Dhoogra says the road remains closed and some trucks are still on fire.

The Jacob Zuma Foundation's spokesperson, Mzwanele Manyi said people have been provoked by Zuma's arrest.

"People of South Africa have been provoked and are responding to the provocation. It is our view that to detain a person without trial, to incarcerate a person without trial is a provocation, we call upon the authorities to remove the provocation so that calm can be restored," said Manyi.
