The Durban Metro Police Department (DMPD) spokesperson, Parboo Sewpersad, says the incident took place outside the councillor's residence.
"Details are unknown at the present related to what happened at the scene; however, they were in a marked police vehicle when they were shot," says Sewpersad.
Sewpersad says the suspects also stole the officers' firearms.
