Durban taxi strike out of hand: Santaco

Santaco's Boy Zondi says they've been trying to get the drivers to move their vehicles.

Zondi has been speaking to Newswatch after taxi drivers who were given permission to protest outside Toyota's Prospecton plant, parked their vehicles off blocking roads in the Durban CBD and other areas including Isipingo, Amanzimtoti, Nandi Drive and Salt Rock. 

"The march is planned by us but the situation that is now taking place the way they're showing their anger is out of hand. 

"It's not easy - taxi operators have really got out of hand. Not because they are disregarding the rules of the road. They are just saying they are tired of talking to people," he said. 

Police spokesperson, Thulani Zwane says the situation has been peaceful so far. He says officers, including metro officers, will move in if the striking drivers don't co-operate. 

"They are not supposed to close the roads. They must have their own march in a legal way. Those blocknig the roads illegally will be arrested," he said. 

Meanwhile, Chairperson of the KwaMnyandu Taxi Owners Association Mzameni Mthiyane has appealed for empathy for striking taxi drivers. He says as far as business is concerned, taxi operators have really been battling. 

"We're not happy with the price - because it goes up and up. Petrol is better because sometimes it increases then decreases. It flies up to a place we cannot reach," he said.
