Minister Barbara Creecy said the registration of e-hailing vehicle owners and drivers is nearly complete.

She said all e-hailing platforms are expected to register with the Universal Consumer Association of South Africa within the next week.

Creecy was speaking at the launch of October Transport Month on Thursday.

“There was a meeting with Uber, and it now appears that within the next week or so, all the e-hailing platforms will be registered with ECASA.”

She said the system would help the government know who is operating in the industry.

-Will public transport become cheaper?-

Meanwhile, Creecy said the department is working to make public transport more affordable, as households and transport operators continue to feel the impact of rising costs and fuel prices.

Creecy said the geopolitical environment has affected supply chains, trade routes and the fuel price.

“The integration of passenger and road transport systems is central to improving affordability and safety for commuters.

“Bus and minibus taxi operators remain central to our transport system. We are in the process of reforming our public transport grant system into a unified support model available on selected routes.”

The minister delivered the keynote address at the Durban Gateway Terminal, where she met with terminal management and received an update on operations.
