The Automobile Association (AA) says its mid-month data shows a decrease in petrol, as well as a lower price for illuminating paraffin.

However, AA spokesperson Layton Beard says projections show a marginal increase of a possible one cent a litre for diesel.

Should these decreases become a reality, it will be implemented in time for motorists making their way back home after the festive season.

The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy is expected to announce the fuel levy from Friday, 27 December.

The new prices will come into effect on midnight, 1 January.
