Ebrahim Rasool returns to Washington as SA ambassador

International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola has confirmed that Ebrahim Rasool will return to Washington as South Africa’s ambassador to the US.
Rasool previously served as ambassador to the US from 2010 to 2015, during President Jacob Zuma’s administration.
Barack Obama was in the White House at the time.
His return comes as the U.S. prepares for a new Republican administration following Donald Trump’s election victory.
Briefing the media on Tuesday, Lamola confirmed that President Cyril Ramaphosa made the appointment.
"This decision was not taken lightly but was based on Rasool’s prior experience and strong credentials, which will expedite his acceptance.
“The president needed to appoint someone capable of handling the situation in a bipartisan manner, engaging effectively with both Democrats and Republicans, as well as with key think tanks and other influential platforms in U.S. foreign policy," said Lamola.
Rasool is a South African politician, diplomat, and activist with a long and distinguished career.
He served as Premier of the Western Cape from 2004 to 2008 and has been active in the anti-apartheid movement with deep ties to the ANC.
He was recently the chairperson of the Development Bank of South Africa.
During his previous tenure in Washington, Rasool focused on strengthening U.S - SA relations, promoting South Africa's interests in trade, investment, and climate change.
His new role will involve maintaining South Africa’s diplomatic relationship with the U.S, and advocating for favorable trade terms, and possibly working to expand AGOA benefits for South Africa.
