Ekhuruleni crash claims 3 lives, injures 11

Three people died and eleven others were injured on Tuesday morning in a multi-vehicle crash in Bapsfontein, on the outskirts of Gauteng.

Paramedics found a wrecked bakkie and a burning car in the middle and on the side of the road respectively. 

A taxi was parked a short distance away.                               

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring says two of the victims died on impact. 

“Medics found a man lying trapped inside the bakkie while another lay trapped inside the smouldering light motor vehicle. Unfortunately, both patients had already succumbed to their numerous injuries.  

“Twelve other patients were tended to on the scene. Five were in a critical condition while seven others had sustained minor to moderate injuries.”

It is understood that the 42-year-old suspect is working as a security guard in one of the prominent Security Companies in Mthatha. He was arrested while trying to escape after committing the crime. Eastern Cape police spokesperson Tembinkosi Kinana says the victim died on the scene.

The third man later succumbed to his injuries at the scene. 

“Once the patients had been treated, one critically injured patient was airlifted to the hospital while the remaining patients were transported by ambulance.” 

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
