Ekurhuleni marks Mandela Day with building of houses

The City of Ekurhuleni will build 45 houses in Palm Ridge to mark this year's Nelson Mandela Day.
Mayor Mzwandile Masina made the announcement at the Mandela Day celebrations in Germiston on Thursday morning.
This year marked the tenth anniversary of Nelson Mandela Day, with the Nelson Mandela Foundation, City of Ekurhuleni, Habitat for Humanity and the Gauteng government joining forces to discuss issues facing the country.
Housing was at the centre of the discussions, as the current housing backlog in Gauteng sits at a million.

Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements Lebogang Maile says in order for the provincial government to deal with the backlog, it will provide at least 100 000 service stands over the next five years.
"We are happy today that we are here to unveil this important project is aimed at building about 6000 houses. There's about 2800 that are already completed houses. We will be also giving about 2000 service stands. That is why in the next five years we be giving people 100 00 service stands.”
