Emergency app launched to tackle gender violence
A new emergency app has been launched to help curb the scourge of gender-based violence.
The app has been Developed by the People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA) and was launched at Constitution Hill on Tuesday.
The app will connect victims with social workers and counselors, and will also notify the social development department of the victims' location.
Victims will be able to report incidents anonymously.
Police Minister Fikile Mbalula says too often victims are blames, and not offered the necessary support at police stations.
"Some of our officers at police stations are too sensitive towards perpetrators. There must never be a question that a perpetrator is the most protected person" Mbalula said.
Social development Minister Bathabile Dlamini says gender-based violence must become a taboo.
"These people that we are fighting live amongst us. They are our brothers, our husbands, our uncles and our neigbours. We must fight gender based violence with all our might" Dlamini said.
