Some residents and parents stood outside Mid-Ennerdale Primary school to prevent angry protestors from burning it down.

“Its criminal intentions some people are taking advantage of the situation. We have pleaded with the community to come and guard the school. It’s obvious that if they threaten to vandalise the school they can go to the other schools as well. Parents are also here to guard the school,” says a resident.

Protesters say the ANC government has neglected coloured areas.

“Since 1994 there has been no development in the coloured areas. Coloured people are now fed up. The democratic Alliance has taken over the City of Johannesburg in nine months and we appreciate the fact there are processes in place. We cannot accept and agree with the looting of businesses in our area,” says one of the residents.

Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba is set to meet with Minister Lindiwe Sisulu and Gauteng Human Settlement MEC Paul Mashatile to discuss the challenges faced by communities that are protesting in Johannesburg.
