Environment Minister urges greater support for rangers
Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Minister David Maynier says South Africa must strengthen the systems and institutions that support field rangers' work.
Maynier was speaking at the World Rangers Day commemoration held at Augrabies National Park, near Upington in the Northern Cape.
Minister David Maynier says more must be done to encourage young South Africans to pursue careers in conservation, adding that the country needs a new generation of rangers, scientists and environmental managers who are committed to protecting the nation's natural heritage for future generations.
"The work you do is not always visible to the broader public, but its impact is felt every day."
The minister also paid tribute to rangers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
Five field rangers have been killed in South Africa so far this year, while 73 others have died in countries around the world.
