Eskom applies to hike tariffs
Updated | By ECR Newswatch
Eskom has made an application to the National Energy Regulator (Nersa) requesting a 13% tariff increase.
The debt-laden power utility hopes the proposed tariff increase will allow it to recover the R27 billion lost as a result of load shedding.
Eskom has been implementing rolling blackouts for more than a week due to a shortage in capacity.
Energy experts believe the proposed increase would see a hike in electricity prices of 17%, but Eskom spokesperson Hasha Tlhotlhalemaje says his is incorrect.
“Let’s say for argument sake, Nersa determines our whole R27 billion to be efficient and we recover it all in April 2021 then the likelihood of recovering that whole 27 billion would be 13% increase, so I don’t know where this 17% comes from.”
