Eskom burnt through 40 million litres of diesel in May, utility reveals

Eskom COO Jan Oberholzer says the power utility has burnt through 40 million litres of diesel in May as it struggles to keep the light on.
The country has been battling constant rolling blackouts since the beginning of the month.
The power utility briefed the media on Monday.
"We are currently burning two million litres per day, so it is a significant burn. For the month to date we have burned 40 million litres already," said Oberholzer.
South Africans have been warned to brace themselves for more rolling blackouts this week.
Stage 3 load shedding will be implemented on Monday and Tuesday between 17:00 - 22:00 and thereafter downgraded to stage 2.

However, the load shedding could escalate to stage 4 at short notice.
The utility’s CEO Andre Ruyter said any addition breakdowns will lead to an increase in load shedding.
"I think it is important to make this point that it may increase if there are additional breakdowns. Now the three units that we expected to return to service successfully have returned as we speak.
“However because of the unreliability and unpredictability of our system should something drastic happen we may be forced to increase the load shedding from stage 3 to stage 4.”
