Eskom says stage 2 load shedding will resume on Monday at 9am.

Spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha says while there is some light at the end of the tunnel, the power utility doesn’t yet have enough generation capacity to suspend load shedding.

“This afternoon Unit 2 of the Koeberg power station, which had been on cold reserve since April 2020, was successfully synchronised into the grid to help relieve the pressure on the generation system,” says Mantshantsha.

“A generation unit each at the Majuba and Lethabo power stations have also returned to service this afternoon. This, however, is still not sufficient to enable Eskom to suspend load shedding.”

The meeting to vote on the future of SAA is set to take place on Tuesday, some seven months after the flag carrier entered administration. The department's spokesperson Sam Mkokeli says the vote will accept or reject the amended business rescue plan.

Eskom started rolling out blackout on Friday following a breakdown in equipment.

“This loss added to breakdowns at the Kriel and the Medupi power stations because of difficulties experienced during startup,” Mantshantsha adds.

“Eskom teams are working around the clock to return as many generation units as possible. The colder weather also means demand for electricity has risen significantly.”

Eskom's direct customers can find their schedules on the Eskom website.
