The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has frozen the bank accounts of Eskom's senior coal manager Petrus Mazibuko.

Mazibuko is alleged to have gotten kickbacks from two suppliers.

"We got a whistleblower indicating to us that there has been some transaction where one official of Eskom was getting gratification from two Eskom suppliers. We started investigating and found that there is a company they created and found that Mr. Mazibuko was getting money in the company's bank account where he is a signatory," the SIU spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said.

"When we probed into this account, we found that only two sources were putting money into this account. There was about R11 million in the account, and we could confirm the two sources are Eskom suppliers. We also found that Mr. Mazibuko did not get any permission from Eskom to do work outside of Eskom and never declared the company to his employer.”

Kganyago says the company has also not done any work that would justify getting paid R11 million.

He says the SIU has written to Eskom to suspend Mazibuko.

Mazibuko will be given an opportunity to make representations to the SIU.
