Eskom set to ease load shedding from Tuesday

Embattled power utility Eskom has announced that stage 3 load shedding will be implemented from 4pm on Sunday.

The planned power cuts will then be eased to stage 2 on Monday morning, followed by stage 4 in the afternoon.
Eskom's board chairperson Mpho Makwana says from Tuesday load shedding will be downgraded to stage 1 during the day and stage 3 in the evenings.
"Stage 3 load shedding will be implemented from 16:00 this afternoon until 05:00 on Monday morning. Stage 2 load shedding will be implemented during the day at 05:00 to 16:00, whereafter stage 1 load shedding will be implemented daily.
"On Monday afternoon stage 4 load shedding will be implemented at 16:00 to 05:00. Evening load shedding will then be reduced to stage 3 daily from Tuesday until further notice. From Tuesday onwards, the country’s set to remain on stage 1 load shedding during the day and stage 3 during the evening, until further notice."
Makwama made the announcement while providing an update on the current system challenges at a media briefing on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Eskom COO Jan Oberholzer said six generating units were expected to return to service this week, which will enable the utility to maintain load shedding at the lower stages.
"While there has been some improvement in the available generating capacity, allowing us to drop the stages of load shedding, we’ve also seen an increase in demand as industry and business try to catch up on lost production, so, this, combined with the unpredictability and unreliability of the generation fleet, makes planning quite difficult and may result in changes to load shedding at short notice in weeks to come."
