Eskom working to stabilise power system
Updated | By Nathan Daniels
Power utility Eskom is working on a 30-day plan to stabilise its system following the latest round of load shedding last week.
Three trade unions, Solidarity, National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) have been locked in wage negotiations with the cash-strapped power utility for more than a month.
Last week saw protesting workers forcing some generating units at power stations to be switched off, leading to power outages.
Unions are currently consulting its members about Eskom’s latest wage offer which it hopes will bring an end to the impasse.
Eskom's Khulu Phasiwe says it doesn't mean that there will be load-shedding daily during the 30-day plan but the probability of forced power cuts on Monday remains low.
"All we are saying that the system might be constrained in certain instances.”
He says while the power system remains constrained, the power utility is managing the situation.
Workers started returning to work at the weekend and more are expected on Monday.
"The more people we have at our, the better... because we run a 24 hours operation."
