Excitement over a ‘new dawn’ at Ramaphosa inauguration
Updated | By Nokukhanya Mntambo
Former president Nelson Mandela's grandson, Mandla Mandela says he is hopeful Cyril Ramaphosa will ring in a new dawn as President of South Africa.
Thousands of people gathered at Loftus Versfeld stadium to witness Ramaphosa’s swearing in as President.
"We are all hopeful as South Africans, as we were in 1994, that a new dawn has set upon us,” said Mandela.
“A lot of people are placing a lot of their hopes on to the President to usher in a new age, to be able to turn the country from where we are, to ensure that we are able create jobs, (to ensure) we are able to bridge the gap between rich and poor, urban and the rural divide."
This will be the first time a South African President has taken the oath of office outside of the Union Buildings.
As Chief of the Mvezo Traditional Council, Mandela added that he is certain the current leaders of the African National Congress will continue from the legacy of his late grandfather.
"Madiba is no longer with us, but I can assure you that he has left the baton on the next generation of leaders in South Africa to pick up the bait on where he has left off.
"I think my grandfather continues to have hope of this leadership of the ANC-led government to continue addressing the need of our people."
In the build-up to the iconic event, many high profile politicians have taken the time to wish Ramaphosa well on his new journey.
Ronald Lamola, member of the ANC NEC, says he hopes the new dawn will be extended to everyone in the country.
"The new dawn must also reflect on the new generation.," said Lamola.
Minister of Social Development, Susan Shabangu says Ramaphosa's priority will be job creation.
