Expert insight on Shaik parole confusion
Updated | By Olivia Phalaetsile

Project coordinator of the Civil Society Prison Reform Initiative Lukas Muntingh says it became evident shortly after his release that his condition was not terminal.
“It would have been highly unlikely for someone on medical parole to apply for normal parole before the Correctional Services Act was amended,” Muntingh says.
Shaik was found guilty of two counts of corruption in 2005 for alleged irregular financial dealings with Jacob Zuma.
He was granted medical parole in 2009 after serving only two years of his 15 year prison sentence.
Muntingh says the Correctional Services Act does however refer to the cancellation of medical parole, but it is not clear on the requirements.
