Families of 94 psychiatric patients speak of anger, sadness
Updated | By JacarandaFM News
Some family members of the 94 psychiatric patients who died in Gauteng have lashed out at Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu.
She resigned after a report by the Health Ombudsman revealed that a number of the NGO's the patients were transferred to from Life Esidimeni were unlicensed.
While many expressed their anger with Mahlangu's absence at today's briefing, others are adamant they will be taking legal action.
"I am taking action and I am not changing my mind, especially now that she has resigned. Had she come here and at least showed her face to say that she believed in what she did," says the sister of one of the women who died.
"I'm angry, but I think we should take the necessary legal action," she says.
A man representing some of the families says this has been a wakeup call.
"We say the government should account, because our people were in their hands," he says.
