FF Plus: Cele 'misleading' public on DNA backlog
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
The Freedom Front Plus has accused Police Minister Bheki Cele of misleading the public on the size of the country's DNA tests backlog.
Party leader Pieter Groenewald says that the DNA backlog within the police department has not been cleared, as claimed by Cele.
The issues of DNA tests and rape kits are in the spotlight again after eight women were gang raped by a group men last week in Krugersdorp.
“Police reports submitted to the parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Police paint a completely different picture,” says Groenewald.
“According to the report for June this year, the backlog with DNA tests stood at 150 131. The report had been signed by Minister Cele.

“In the July report the backlog had grown to a staggering 180 381.”
Groenewald has also called for Cele to be fired.
“There is clearly only one solution to this problem and that is to replace the current Minister of Police with someone who does not only do crisis management, but who is willing and able to effectively address the crime problem.
"Someone who, unlike Minister Cele, does not want to simultaneously fill the offices of minister and commissioner and, thus, undermine the police's operational functioning.”
