Five children killed by runaway truck at NW school
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
Five children were killed when a truck crashed through a school fence in Potchefstroom in North West.
It is understood the truck crashed through the fence and stopped in the parking area on Thursday afternoon.
Four others were injured.
ER24's Russel Meiring says paramedics arrived on the scene and found three children lying underneath the truck.
"All the children were believed to be aged between 7 and 11. Medics quickly assessed the patients and found four children had shown no signs of life. Unfortunately, nothing could be done for them, and they were later declared dead,” says Meiring.
Three other children were in critical condition, while two others had severe injuries.
"Medics treated the patients and provided them with advanced life support. Unfortunately, after a short time, one critically injured child succumbed to their injuries," he adds.
Meiring says the driver of the truck escaped injury.
Police are investigating the circumstances which led to the crash.
