Updated | By Algoa FM & Gcinokuhle Malinga
Five people were killed after the driver of a minibus taxi lost control on the N2 between Cintsa and Brakfontein just outside East London on Tuesday.
Spokesperson for Provincial Traffic, Unathi Bhinqose, says adverse weather resulted in the fatal accident.
He says that, according to the driver, who survived the accident, he had to swerve off the road to avoid a fallen tree.
The deceased, all adults, include two men and three women.
Bhinqose says the driver and a female passenger were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
A case of culpable homicide is under investigation.
Meanwhile, in KwaZulu-Natal, the N2 around Kokstad and Port Shepstone in the south has been completely closed due to snowfall.
KZN Transport's Ndabezinhle Sibiya says traffic officials are already on scene and responding to heavy congestion on the route leading to Kokstad.
Trucks are stuck in the snow.
"To save lives, we have decided to close completely the road between Kokstad and Pietermaritzburg as well as the R603 - Tacoma to Reit. The RTI team is working with traffic police from Kokstad and Ray Nkonyeni Local municipalities to redirect motorists and to clear the snow.”
