The Gauteng Department of Education has confirmed that five pupils and a parent were arrested at Tsakane Secondary School on Thursday.
They were arrested for allegedly disrupting teaching and learning at the Ekurhuleni school.
According to the department, the pupils had been involved in several incidents at the school.
They are alleged to have thrown stones during Grade 12 camps, damaged school property, and set fire to toilets.
On Wednesday, they allegedly threatened teachers and students with knives, blocked passages, and demanded money and mobile phones.
One of the arrested pupils had previously been suspended for allegedly assaulting a female pupil with a chair, but continued returning to the school despite the suspension.
On Thursday, the group allegedly disrupted classes again, including the Grade 12 preliminary examinations. The arrested parent is alleged to have supported the disruptive behaviour.
“We remain resolute in our commitment to protect the right to education and to ensure that teaching and learning continue without disruption in Gauteng schools. Every learner has a right to quality education, and every teacher has a right to a safe working environment,” said Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane.
“Threats or intimidation directed at the school or its employees will not be tolerated and will be dealt with through appropriate legal channels.”
