Flooding leaves Pretoria Magistrate’s Court in the dark

The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development said the outages were caused by flooding, which compromised the court’s electrical structure. 

The magistrate’s court has been without power since Monday.

"A backup generator is currently operational. However, it was designed to serve as a short-term power solution," the department’s Kgalalelo Masibi said. 

“The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure is going to assess the damage and ensure that power is restored as quickly as possible.”

Meanwhile, Tshwane's emergency services have issued another weather alert after the South African Weather Service issued a yellow level 4 warning for disruptive rainfall.

The severe weather is forecast to bring heavy rainfall, which may cause localised flooding in low-lying areas, traffic disruptions, and pose a danger to life due to fast-flowing streams and rivers.

The city's EMS stated that it would continue monitoring weather reports and remain on high alert for any related emergencies.

"The City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department is calling on communities to remain alert following a yellow level 4 warning issued for disruptive rain by the South African Weather Service,” said Tshwane EMS spokesperson Lindsay Mnguni.

“If possible, stay indoors and away from metal objects which may be hit by lightning, do not seek shelter under trees, and avoid crossing flooded low-lying roads."
