Ford recalls 2026 transit vehicles over transmission fault

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has issued a safety recall for several 2026 Ford Transit models, warning of a potentially dangerous transmission defect that could cause vehicles to suddenly lose movement.
The recall, initiated by Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (Manufacturing) (Pty) Ltd, affects certain 2026 model-year Ford Transit, Ford Transit Custom, and Ford Tourneo Custom vehicles sold in South Africa between 7 October 2025 and 9 June 2026.
The vehicles were also exported to Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho and Eswatini.
According to the NCC, the issue lies in the vehicles’ 8F57 automatic transmission, which may contain a faulty component.
"This may result in a sudden and unexpected loss of vehicle movement," said NCC spokesperson Pheto Ntaba.
The defect is linked to an Electronic One-Way Clutch Assembly that may have been built with an unseated snap ring.
"When the vehicle is shifted into drive, it may fail to move forward due to a loss of first gear," Ntaba explained.
"In some instances, the vehicle may also lose the ability to operate in reverse."
Phetho warned that this could pose a serious safety risk to motorists and other road users, urging owners of the affected vehicles to act without delay.
"Consumers who own the affected vehicles are urged to take their vehicles to the nearest authorised Ford dealership to arrange for an inspection and repair."
