Former Emfuleni fleet manager to remain behind bars
Former Emfuleni Municipal Fleet Manager Lerato Mpholo will remain in custody after appearing in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates’ Court on Monday, where his fraud and corruption case was postponed.
The 42-year-old is accused of being linked to an allegedly irregular municipal vehicle fleet tender, in which approximately R16 million was paid to a service provider for the supply of 18 vehicles, including UD trucks and bakkies.
Investigations have revealed that only seven of the vehicles were delivered, despite the alleged full payment.
During proceedings, Mpholo’s defence indicated that it could not proceed with a bail application without access to the statement Mpholo made in April, they say was made available by another legal team but had not yet been provided.
"I cannot proceed with this bail application without knowing exactly what is depicted or what my client is supposed to measure," argued the defence.
The state told the court it would consult with the investigating officer regarding the contents of the statement and assess whether releasing it could affect ongoing investigations.
"Because whatever information that, even if we send the matter now, then we also need to prepare for the bail application," said the prosecuting officer.
The matter has been postponed to 27 July, with Mpholo remaining in custody until his next court appearance.
