Former Joburg mayor Mpho Moerane passes away

Former Johannesburg mayor Mphoe Moerane has died.

Moerane was admitted to Milpark Hospital in Parktown last week Tuesday following a horrific car crash.
The details of the crash remain sketchy but it’s understood he was on his way home in the south of Joburg, coming from an ANC regional meeting.
Moerane succumbed to injuries on Wednesday, hours after a false alarm.
Speaking on behalf of the family, a sombre Mike Maile confirmed the news to journalists at the hospital.
“His family has been by the bedside since day one until the final minute. They are still with him as we speak,” Maile said.
“Throughout our communication, we have continuously stated that he is in a critical condition and that the doctors did the best that they could.”
Maile slammed social media users that engaged in speculation of his death.
“It’s unfortunate that Mpho was killed many times before certified by those qualified to do so and I do not know, neither will I understand why people continued to spread rumours.
“It traumatised the family and it was a very sad and unfortunate happening. I do not wish it on any other person,” Maile added.
Memorial and funeral details are yet to be discussed.
Moerane is the third city mayor to have died in less than a year.
Moerane shot to prominence last year when he was elected the city’s first citizen, succeeding the late Jolidee Matongo who also died in a horrific car crash in September.
Earlier in the year, Geoff Makhubo died of Covid-19 related complications.
