Four arrested for Bekkersdal protests

Gauteng police have confirmed that four people have been arrested following violent protests in Bekkersdal on the West Rand.
The protest erupted on Wednesday when residents from the area took the the streets, demanding electricity, water, adequate sewerage pipes and school maintenance.

Police fired rubber bullets to disperse the crowds.
Gauteng Police spokesperson Kay Makhubele says two of the arrested are being charged for being in possession of stolen goods, and the other two for public violence.
Makhubela added that the situation is calm and police are monitoring the area.
"So far we will remain in the area until the order is restored," Makhubela said.
