Four killed in Benoni shootout
Updated | By MornéJK
Four men have been killed and two others injured in a shootout on the N12 near the Putfontein turnoff in Benoni.
Police spokesperson Vish Naidoo says members from the flying squad in Johannesburg were conducting a routine patrol when they spotted a suspicious looking vehicle.
"Our members tried to stop the car where after they opened fire on police officers," Naidoo says.
One police member was injured and four suspects shot dead.
"We found three rifles as well as explosives in the boot of the vehicle," he says.
Naidoo says the vehicle was reported as hijacked in the Yeoville area in April this year.
"Given that the suspects were heavily armed as well as the explosives in the vehicle it is alleged that they were planning a massive robbery."
