Four men were rescued after their rubber-duck boat drifted 22km off-shore of Hangklip in the Western Cape on Sunday, said the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) in Hermanus.
It appeared that the men launched on Saturday night but experienced mechanical failure, NSRI spokesman Craig Lambinon said in a statement.
It was believed that their anchor dragged until they were in deep water where they drifted further without power, Lambinon said.
NSRI launched a search at 5am although the men had no idea how far out at sea or in which direction they had drifted.
"At midday the men reported to be close to ships at the sea in the shipping lanes and they were soon rescued."
He said the men were discovered unharmed with no life-jackets or safety equipment onboard.
Lambinon urged boaters to wear life-jackets at all times, carry red distress flares, a hand-held navigation device and a water proof torch.
