Four suspected robbers have been killed in a shoot-out with police in Harding, KwaZulu-Natal.
A gun battle between police and the gang of suspects broke out on Monday morning, shortly after a businessman was robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash.
Provincial police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda said the gang held the man at gunpoint after he had withdrawn money from the bank at the local mall.
The robbers opened fire when they were approached by the police.
"A multidisciplinary team comprising officers from the Hawks, K9 and other units operationalised intelligence about the robbery which was to be executed at a mall,” Netshiunda said.
"Police approached the suspects who had just committed the robbery, and the suspects defied police's orders and opened fire, police returned fire, and four suspects were fatally wounded during the shootout.”
Netshiunda said a manhunt is underway for more suspects who fled the scene.
"A firearm as well as the money which was robbed was found in possession of the suspects.”
