The suspects were arrested in connection with the murder of police detective Charl Kinnear.

The suspected gang leader is alleged to be a major underworld figure, previously linked to crimes relating to nightclub security.

The arrests were made on Thursday in a dramatic operation that shut down a large area around Century City.

The Hawks say the suspects are also linked to the attempted murder of the Cape Town lawyer William Booth.

Kinnear died in a hit outside his house in Bishop Lavis in September last year.

A former rugby player, Zane Kilian, was apprehended in connection with the murder earlier and denied bail.

Meanwhile, Police Minister Bheki Cele says they have also maintained that Kinnear's murder was no random act but a callous one that’s part of a conspiracy that is being exposed by the work of the police.

Cele says they are expecting more arrests.
