The two girls, aged 10 and 14 respectively, were pupils at Utopia Farm School.

It is understood that the girls ate the brown beans before school and subsequently complained of stomach cramps.

"They were swiftly taken to the nearby clinic where they were certified dead,” says Free State Education spokesperson Howard Ndaba.

“The father of the deceased learners also passed on his way to the hospital after he also ate the same beans. Another sibling aged 11 of the deceased learners who consumed the same beans was admitted to Phekolong Hospital."

The mother and the aunt have been arrested and are set to appear in Bethlehem Magistrate on Friday.
