The Department of Education in Gauteng has lost more than R121 million to theft and vandalism.
This is according to spokesperson Steve Mabona, who says that the department has recorded 262 cases of theft and vandalism since the beginning of 2019.
"It is concerning that the department has lost a total of R121 348 663.40.
"In 256 schools in Gauteng, there were 262 cases of theft and vandalism reported," he says.
The department says it has also seen a “sizeable” number of incidents involving bullying, violence and assault.
Mabona says 187 incidents of bullying and 107 of violence and assault have been reported.
A recent incident Gauteng, where a 16-year-old pupil from Thuto Lesedi Secondary School was raped by two matric learners last month, has rocked the province.
It's alleged that the female learner was dragged and assaulted before she was raped in the school's toilets.
The two learners have been suspended, while the victim is being re-integrated into the schooling system.
