Gauteng govt working to organise e-hailing drivers
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
The Gauteng Department of Transport says it is working to organise workers in the e-hailing sector following the violence at Maponya Mall in Soweto last week.
This follows community outrage over the murder of an e-hailing driver, Mthokozisi Mvelase (27), apparently amid ongoing tensions between minibus taxi drivers and e-hailing operators.
Two others were injured, and a car was torched.
Mvelase was killed while stationed at a pickup point at the mall.
Gauteng Transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela met with the mall's management, taxi associations and e-hailing operators in Pimville on Monday.
"The first thing is to get them properly organised and then assist them in being legalised, operating legally, and dealing with the other challenges they have. Amongst the challenges they have is exploitation from the apps that they are participating in."
The MEC said the provincial government has begun assisting the centre manager in accrediting e-hailing services operating in the area.
"We are happy that Soweto, Sowetans are making their own determination to organise themselves better. So we plead with every e-hailer in Soweto to really come on board."
Meanwhile, KZN Social Development MEC Mbalo Shinga visited the family of the slain driver in eNhlungwane village, outside Ulundi, on Monday to offer counselling services.
