Gauteng govt: Worst is over as Covid-19 recoveries increase
The Gauteng provincial government believes the worst of the Covid-19 pandemic is over amid a steady increase in recoveries.
The province had 30512 active cases on Friday, with 169 299 recoveries and 3 144 deaths.
Johannesburg remains the provincial hotspot with more than 18 000 confirmed cases.
"Gauteng has surpassed 200 000 cases and although we might be carrying the highest number of cases we are also carrying the highest recoveries and that is commendable. This is a sign that Covid-19 is not a death sentence," the Department of Health's COO Lesiba Malotana told a Covid-19 media briefing on Friday.

"We have had an increase of over 7000 cases over the past seven days, in previous data those numbers would have increased in two days. We are of the opinion that we’ve got the wind behind our backs and the worst is over as the numbers are decreasing rapidly."
The Department of Housing's HOD Melita Gasela, reporting for Community Safety, warned that law enforcement will be intensifying its campaign to ensure residents comply with all the regulations.
There will also be more on-site visits to different facilities, especially places where alcohol is sold.
