Gauteng launches new campaign to clear license renewal backlog
Updated | By Gaopalelwe Phalaetsile
The Gauteng Transport Department and the Road Traffic Management Cooperation have launched a so-called 'request a slot' campaign to deal with the massive backlog in the renewal of licenses.
Gauteng has a backlog of 437 000 licenses which have expired since 2020.
Motorists will now be able to book a slot to renew their licenses through a 'request a slot’ mobile app, the online booking system that is already available, and through emails to [email protected] and [email protected].
Transport MEC Jacob Mamabolo also opened the second new Driving Licence Testing Centre at the RTMC offices in Midrand in an effort to increase capacity.
He said by the end of the year, the department will have 10 new DLTC facilities.
One has also been opened last week in Eco Park in Tshwane.
Four will be placed at Gautrain stations.
"It means by the end of the year we would have added additional 10 more facilities and therefore we will be able to augment the capacity as needed. The two centers, one in Eco Park and the one here in Midrand will operate seven days a week and will operate from 7am to 9pm," said Mamabolo
The RTMC's Ashraf Moosa said as of Monday, over 100 people registered when they launched the campaign.
He said the mobile app will still need approval and should be finalised by early next week.
Mamabolo said the campaign will intensify during Transport Month in October.
