On Sunday morning, the Department of Energy announced more fuel price hikes to come into effect for the month of July.

The prices are will come into effect on 4 July 2018.

Petrol will go up by between 23 cents and 26 cents per litre, while diesel will increase by between 24 and 26 cents.

Illuminated paraffin will increase by 22 cents per litre and Gas Retail Price will go up 37 cents per kilogram.

This while consumers across the country relying on gas to cook and stay warm, prepare for an intense cold front.

Energy department spokesperson, Robert Maake, says the increases are mainly due to the depreciation of the Rand against the dollar.

"The international prices of petroleum products decreased on average during the period under review. This was in line with the lower crude oil prices," Maake says.

Maake says the lower crude oil prices cushioned the blow of the increase.

"In fact, if it wasn't for the lower crude oil prices which actually cushioned the prices by close 20 cents per litre, otherwise the price would be increasing by close to 40 cents," Maake concluded.
