The Road Traffic Management Corporation, Gauteng Traffic Police, metro police from Johannesburg, Tshwane, and Ekurhuleni, as well as the SAPS, have confirmed rolling and full road closures on key highways and major urban routes throughout the week.

Authorities are urging residents to plan and allow extra travel time.

Mayor Roads Affected in Johannesburg:

High-security operations will impact the N1, N3, N12, M1, and parts of the Golden Highway.

Urban hotspots such as Sandton, Rosebank, Melrose Arch, Fourways, Roodepoort and Nasrec will also be affected.

Grayston Drive will be fully closed on 22 November, while sections of the Golden Highway and Nasrec Road face multi-day closures.

Major Roads Affected in Tshwane:

Major closures are expected along the N1 through Centurion and Pretoria East, including Atterbury, Garsfontein, Delmas, Botha, and John Vorster interchanges.

The R21 corridor will also experience rolling closures as convoys move between Tshwane and OR Tambo International Airport.

Major Roads Affected in Ekurhuleni:

Routes around OR Tambo, including the R21, R24, N12 and key urban roads such as North Rand Road, Trichardt Road and Northern Road, will experience delays.

The G20 Social Summit will take place in Ekurhuleni, adding to traffic pressure in the area.

Officials warn that when convoys move, all traffic, including pedestrians and cyclists, will be stopped, with delays of up to 30 minutes to an hour.

Rolling closures are scheduled for 22 and 23 November, between 07:00 – 10:00 and 17:00 – 20:00.

Alternative routes motorists are encouraged to use:

M57 instead of the R21, with smaller regional roads through Germiston, Kempton Park, and Bedfordview, rather than the R24/N12.

Beyers Naudé, Christiaan De Wet and Ontdekkers instead of Hendrick Potgieter

Chris Hani Rd, Main Reef Rd, Crownwood Rd, Soweto Highway and N17 around Nasrec and southern Johannesburg

Side streets parallel to Rivonia, Jan Smuts and Oxford in Sandton, Parktown and Rosebank.

Authorities say that safety and the smooth movement of delegations remain a priority, with traffic officers, signage, and real-time updates available throughout the summit.
