Gauteng moves to rebuild Covid-shattered economy

The country has recently moved to level 2 of the lockdown which allows for greater economic activity. 

 

On Friday, the Gauteng Provincial Command Council briefed the media on the status of the Covid-19 pandemic in the province.

 

Ekurhuleni Mayor Mzwandile Masina said his metro has at least eleven projects lined up to boost the economy. 

 

One of the projects will see the building of a new road to OR Tambo International Airport to order to relieve congestion on the Gillooly's interchange.

"The road leading to the airport is always congested, causing problems for us and yet the airport is a strategic pillar of the aerotropolis master plan that we developed,” Masina said.

 

"We are working with the province to develop what is called the PWV 15 which is going to cost about R8.6 billion, which is a new road that will lead to the airport. Inparticular, that we release the congestion of Giloolys so that the people and goods can move quicker to the airport. This is one of the big projects that is in advanced planning."

 

Meanwhile, the City of Johannesburg has plans to refurbish the Kelvin power station.

 

Mayor Geoff Makhubo said the power station will provide the city with efficient and reliable electricity. 

 

“One of the key issues that will give Joburg a competitive advantage in the short term is the reliability of electricity and availability of reliable energy and electricity. The team is on the ground working towards the revitalisation of the Kelvin power station to make sure that it gives us at least 20% of our energy needs throughout the City of Johannesburg.” 

 

The City of Tshwane has been allocated a budget of R50 billion for industrial development. 

 

The areas the city will focus on will include rail, bus manufacturing and aerospace.
