Gauteng online applications for the 2027 school year kick off today
Updated | By Marlinée Fouché
Parents and guardians of schoolchildren entering Grade 1 and Grade 8 in 2027 can officially start applying for placement in public schools as of 08am on Wednesday.
The MEC for education, Lebogang Maile, is expected to officially "switch on" the system at the Sam Ntuli Sports Centre in Thokoza, after which parents have until the 4th of September 2026 to submit their applications.
The spokesperson for the MEC, Onwabile Lubhelwana, says Maile will conduct a live demonstration of the process to "show parents and guardians just how seamless, simple and user-friendly the application process is."

THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN YOU APPLY
On a previous occasion, MEC Maile reminded parents to register new usernames and passwords, since the previous ones had expired.
Furthermore, he advises applying to 3-5 schools to improve chances of placement, rather than applying to only one school.
"We encourage every parent and legal guardian to apply as early as possible, submit authentic supporting documents, follow every step of the application process carefully, and make full use of the department's official support services whenever assistance is required," he said.
Parents or guardians who want to apply for placement in Grades 2 to 7, or Grades 9 to 12, should do so in person.
