Gauteng Political Killings Task Team operations in full swing - Mthombeni
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
Gauteng Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni has confirmed that the province’s Political Killings Task Team is continuing with its work.
The unit is tasked with investigating murders involving politicians in the province.
Mthombeni confirmed that operations are in full swing during the release of the province's crime stats in Randburg on Thursday.
The Gauteng Political Killings Task Team was established late last year to address the surge in political and administrative assassinations, particularly targeting local government officials, with investigations potentially dating back to 2010.
This unit, similar to the KZN model, aims to resolve cases, investigate taxi industry links, and curb organised crime infiltration within government
The creation of the task team comes at a time when the disbandment of the National Political Killings Task Team remains a focus of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
Some of the political murders in Gauteng include the killing of IFP Deputy Chief Whip, Khethamabala Sithole, who was gunned down at a hostel in Katlehong in May last year.
An ANC councillor in Tshwane, Thabang Masemola, was also gunned down in Mamelodi in July last year.
"That formation has been realised, comprehensively so. We are on the ground, and we have started in terms of the Political Killings Task Team,” said Mthombeni.
